Muvattupuzha, a flourishing suburban town in Ernakulam District and lying close to the fringes of the Idukki District is an emerging agricultural and business hub; equally the haven of a highly literate people living in amity and friendship, with a number of educational institutions strewn around. As the very name suggests- 'Muvattupuzha' is the confluence of three rivers. Close to Muvattupuzha river, stands Holy Magi Church- the earliest catholic church of the locality. With the increase in Christian population, the moderate sized Holy Magi Church couldn't contain the ever swelling congregation. Moreover for the people staying in between Holy Magi Church and St. Sebastian's Church, Anikkadu, it was difficult to travel long distances to attend the church. So the idea of a new church was mooted. On 5/4/1997, the Catholic population of the locality assembled together at Nirmala College Auditorium under the presidency of Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas Malekkudy to discuss the formation of a church. The need for a place of worship was highlighted and consensus was reached.
On 30/8/1997, the sanction was accorded by the Diocesan Curia of the Syro Malabar Church and the charge of construction was entrusted with Rev. Fr. Vincent Nedungatt, the then Bursar of the College. Thus, atop Nirmala hills close to Nirmala College, a convenient site was identified. The foundation stone was laid on 8/9/1997 by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. George Punnakottil. It took almost three years for the construction works to be over and it was the realization of a long cherished dream. The consecration and the blessing of the newly built Nirmala Matha Church was done on 28/12/2000 by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. George Punnakottil and Rev. Fr. Vincent Nedungatt was affirmed as the first Vicar. On 6/10/1997, Rev. Fr. Pulloppillil was appointed Asst. Vicar. Again on 21/01/2001 Fr. Jose Kodamullil came in as Asst. Vicar and on 16/06/2002 Fr. Jose Pulloppillil took charge of the parish as Vicar. As it is a pre-requisite to have a cemetery for a church, the construction of a modern cemetery was started and His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. George Punnakkottil blessed the cemetery on 18/08/2005. Rev. Fr. Nicholas Moolasseril took over as the Vicar on 15/05/2005. A parish monthly bulletin, 'Nirmala Matha Voice' was released on 01/10/2007.
Soon the construction of St. Sebastian's hall and adjacent rooms began. On 09/05/2009 Rev. Fr. George Pottackal came in as Vicar. On 29/11/2009 the blessing of the hall and rooms were done and the first parish assembly was convened there on 03/06/2011. As per the suggestion of the parish assembly, a new programme viz. 'Asraya Project' for disbursing interest free loans to the needy for higher education, medical expenses and house construction was started. The 'Athma sthithy' of the parishioners got computerized and the church web site was launched on 16/12/2012 by Rt Rev Dr George Punnakkottil, Bishop of Kothamangalam. Now, on a promontory nestled in a verdant belt of greenery, stands aloft the beautiful Nirmala Matha Church with its steeples towering into the skies exuding an aura of peaceful divinity in a sylvan setting amid a number of institutions; religious and educational. It has become the place of worship and the fountainhead of the spiritual energy of over 300 Catholic families.
